Radford Rugby Alumni Association sponsors Annual DC Golf Tournament

Have fun! That was the intention at this year’s NOVA/D.C. Golf Tournament held at South Riding Golf Course. This annual golf tournament, hosted by Radford’s Office of Alumni Relations, was held June 9th with all the proceeds going to the Washington D.C. Alumni Chapter Scholarship Fund which is open to anyone residing in Washington D.C or surrounding areas. With 101 participants and multiple sponsors, the event raised $5,000 that will go towards enhancing the education of a Radford University Student.

Not only was the event a great success, it also marked the first Radford University Alumni event that the newly minted Men’s Rugby Alumni Association had the privilege of participating in. The Rugby Alumni Association was a Rowdy Red Hole Sponsor for the tournament having the honor of being the sponsor of the very first hole. With 2016 being the inaugural year for the group, its President, Eric Anderson ’01, had this to say about sponsoring a hole, “This is an exciting opportunity for us. We want to present our association at RU sponsored events in order to build rapport with various alumni organizations and Alumni Relations. True to our organization’s values, this event allows us to invest in the future of students and Radford University.”

In addition to having multiple former rugby players attend the event, the tournament welcomed the presence of Dr. George S. Low, Dean of the College of Business and Economics, current Radford University Alumni Ambassador for the DC Region, Mike DeFilippo ‘90, and multiple staff members from the alumni office.

The Men’s Rugby Alumni Association seeks to provide athletic guidance for current players, help increase Radford University Admissions through scholarships, and strengthen connections with Alumni Relations. President Anderson stated “We are excited to begin this journey to have a well-supported alumni association that will work with the university, help develop and mentor current rugby players, bring new players to Radford University, and have them graduate from a well-respected, affordable university.”
